Cornerboard: Stabilizing a Pallet with Optimum Weight Distribution

Due to double stacking, high temperatures, humidity, and poor packaging techniques, a company that ships fresh produce was experiencing  the bottom tier of a pallet being crushed under the weight of other pallets. The produce company contacted IPS Packaging to seek a true solution to their problem. IPS Packaging suggested using stretch wrap and cornerboard. To alleviate the pressure on the bottom tier, use stretch wrap in combination with cornerboard.

The use of cornerboard in congruence with stretch wrap provides an extremely strong stacking strength. Even weight distribution is promoted because top tiers are actually holding some of their own weight…with the help of the stretch wrap!

Because of the nature of stretch film, namely, its memory, after stretch film has been stretched, it attempts to return to its original state. This process actually relieves much of the weight of the bottom pallets, because of the stretch film’s grip and its ability to “creep” tighter. You will notice a much more even tension and weight distribution across all four corners of a pallet.

If, prior to applying stretch wrap, four pieces of cornerboard are used, the stretch film will work in combination with the cornerboard, allowing it to be even more effective. Although stretch wrap is a durable material, maximum effectiveness is only achieved when using a stretch wrapping machine with a pre-stretch device of at least 240%.
