Canned foods and perishables have long been a convenient commodity for packaging and protecting perishable items and remain that way today. However, even with the durable safeguards they offers, they are susceptible to certain types of damage, like leaks or punctures. A puncture or broken seal can be highly detrimental to a can and the goods it contains, because even small stress-induced pinholes that are invisible to the naked eye can lead to microbial growth inside, which makes it incredibly dangerous for consumers to eat the food inside.
When pallets upon pallets full of canned goods are stacked on top of each other, a pallet edge or corner will oftentimes rest on the middle portion of the can, which crushes the can itself. Ideally, pallet corners should rest on the rough and tough edges of the cans, rather than in the soft middle portion, but as we all know, the ideal scenario is frequently not what occurs. Cans are much more likely to be damaged if heavy weight rests on the softer middle section instead of on the rims.
Here at IPS Packaging & Automation, we've created a simple, effective way to help prevent potential damage to cans during the shipping and handling processes. The solution is to stack layers of either honeycomb
The solution is solid-fiber tiersheets: solid-fiber tiersheets are the ideal replacement for chipboard separators used in manufacturing of glass or plastic containers and metal cans. The tiersheets we offer at IPS span the entire diameter of the cans in each stacked layer so that no edges of pallets can possibly crush other cans. By completely covering the tops of the cans on the outside top rows with solid-fiber tiersheets, the weight of the pallet top is spread evenly across the lid of the cans below.
Solid-fiber tiersheets are strong and durable with consistent sizes and gauges. In addition, they are reusable, which lowers the cost of them too! They have rounded corners which do not puncture stretch wrap!
